Principal UI/UX Designer

Polyarc is seeking a Principal UI/UX Designer to shepherd the creation of visually compelling and innovative user interfaces that elevate player engagement and help define the creative vision for our games. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of UI/UX within our studio while growing into a position of influence and mentorship over time.

As a Principal UI/UX Designer at Polyarc, you’ll combine artistic vision with technical expertise to create intuitive and immersive interfaces that connect meaningfully with a wide variety of players. You will work closely with teams across multiple disciplines, ensuring alignment with the game’s overarching vision while contributing to a high-fidelity approach to UI design.

This role is embedded within our Game Design discipline, requiring a strong understanding of game design principles, with a primary focus on UI design and an ability to support UX integration into gameplay seamlessly. Principal Designers at Polyarc are expected to bridge gaps across disciplines, proactively address challenges, and unify workflows to deliver cohesive and engaging player experiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and iterate on UI systems and assets in collaboration with other disciplines, shepherding the process from concept to in-game implementation.
  • Develop and proactively validate UI strategies, workflows, and performance optimizations, reinforcing best practices and project alignment.
  • Partner with Game Designers, Engineers, Artists, Sound Designers, and other stakeholders to create cohesive and immersive UI experiences.
  • Work with Product and QA teams to analyze player feedback, ensuring readability, accessibility, and engagement across target player demographics.
  • Identify and solve complex UI challenges, integrating design principles and technical expertise.
  • Proactively address blockers by exploring in-game solutions, bridging gaps between disciplines, and leveraging design principles to unify efforts.
  • Contribute to a healthy, collaborative culture by seeking out, providing, and applying feedback to reduce workflow friction, improve our game systems, and encourage creativity.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience in UI design across all stages of game development, with a proven track record of shipping high-fidelity UI experiences.
  • Advanced proficiency with Unreal Engine, including UMG and Blueprint scripting, with a portfolio showcasing impactful UI implementations.
  • Proven expertise in graphic design tools such as Photoshop, Figma, and Illustrator.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive UI strategies, deliver large-scale projects, and navigate ambiguity with a problem-solving mindset.
  • Effective mentorship skills, with a track record of supporting teams, fostering growth in UI best practices, and encouraging a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams, integrating player research and market understanding into your designs, and fostering healthy collaboration across disciplines.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to partner with cross-functional teams and convey technical and creative concepts with clarity.

Pluses:

  • Experience with VR/AR UI design.
  • A portfolio of AAA game projects showcasing UI contributions.
  • Knowledge of user research methodologies and the ability to integrate findings into design decisions.
  • Familiarity with Unreal Engine’s advanced features and workflows, with the ability to optimize and troubleshoot complex systems.
  • Solid foundation in graphic design principles, with a keen eye for visual and interaction design trends.

Compensation:

Polyarc’s salary range for this role is:

  • USD: $148,000 to $172,000, with a total compensation target (cash + equity) of $185,000 to $191,500.
  • CAD: $142,000 to $166,000, with a total compensation target (cash + equity) of $177,801 to $184,024.

Any final compensation is dependent on position leveling, taking into consideration the candidate’s qualifications and experiences.

Additionally, there are several other great benefits such as health care benefits (medical, dental, and vision), 401K, flexible PTO (25 accrued PTO days/yr), two seasonal holidays (5 days each) + 10 additional paid holidays, long term disability insurance, life & AD&D, and other voluntary benefits such as pet insurance.
