Principal Technical UI Designer

Polyarc is searching for a Principal Technical UI Designer to guide the creation and development of visually engaging and responsive user interfaces. Your work will elevate the player experience and bring our game worlds to life.

As a UI Designer at Polyarc, you’ll blend artistry with technical ability, turning complex ideas into intuitive interfaces that players love to engage with. You will collaborate closely with a wide range of disciplines to bring the game’s vision to life. Whether it’s brainstorming new ways to immerse players in the game or finding clever solutions to challenging design problems, you’ll play a key role in shaping the player’s experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Inspire, guide, and implement interface designs from concept to completion ensuring they are intuitive, engaging, and enhance the player’s experience.
  • Create documentation, wireframes, interactive prototypes, or storyboards to identify UI needs and communicate vision to the team.
  • Help establish and maintain UI workflow improvements, performance optimizations, and team adoption of best practices.
  • Collaborate with Artists, Sound Designers, Writers, and other disciplines to shape the look and feel of the UI across the project.
  • Work with Engineers to develop UI systems and debug UMG/Blueprint issues.
  • Prioritize player engagement alongside our Product and QA teams to understand player needs, ensure readability, and propose improvements to create a quality experience for all players.
  • Contribute to a healthy, collaborative culture by seeking out, providing, and applying feedback to reduce workflow friction, improve our game systems, and encourage creativity.

Qualifications:

  • Professional experience working as a UI designer through all stages of game development (e.g., concept, prototype, vertical slice, alpha, beta, and release).
  • In-depth understanding of UI development best practices and gameplay information architecture.
  • Significant experience implementing UI layouts in Unreal Engine or a similar visual scripting game engine.
  • Proficiency with graphic design tools such as Photoshop, Figma, and Illustrator.
  • Strong ability to identify, scope, prioritize, and deliver UI features from concept to completion, even in situations with ambiguity or incomplete information.
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams, integrating product considerations into your designs, and fostering healthy collaboration across disciplines.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate design concepts and technical details in a way that fosters team understanding.

Pluses:

  • Familiarity with virtual or augmented reality development.
  • Experience developing UI for AAA games.
  • Solid knowledge of user research methods and best practices.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting the growth of other team members.
  • Working knowledge of UE4/5, Blueprint, and UMG.
  • Good grasp of graphic design principles.

Compensation:

Polyarc’s salary range for this role is $148,000 to $173,000, with a total compensation target (cash + equity) of $184,000 to $192,000. Any final compensation is dependent on position leveling, taking into consideration the candidate’s qualifications and experiences.  

Additionally, there are several other great benefits such as health care benefits (medical, dental, and vision), 401K, flexible PTO (25 accrued PTO days), two seasonal holidays (5 days each) + 10 additional paid holidays, long term disability insurance, life & AD&D, and other voluntary benefits such as pet insurance.
